Things To Draw For Halloween

"Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble." - Shakespeare's Macbeth

A good number of children have nightmares and it's around the age of 10 when they peak.

Did you use to have scary dreams?

Nightmares are often related to irrational fears: something hiding under the bed, a monster in the shadows, a noise that sounds like a ghost, the wind howling through the trees, etc. Even as adults, some of these fears persist, but some of us love scary things, especially when it comes to watching scary films on Halloween.

Why not turn these fears into awesome drawings?

Let's look at what you can draw at the scariest time of the year.

How to Draw a Scary Pumpkin

When we think of Halloween, we think of pumpkins, costumes, spiders, ghosts, witches, and bats.

How do you draw a pumpkin?

Here's how to draw a scary pumpkin:

  • Start by drawing the stalk at the top of the pumpkin.
  • Continue by drawing the pumpkin itself: three arcs underneath the stalk to form the top of the pumpkin. Do the same for the base of the pumpkin.
  • Join the top to the bottom with curved lines.
  • Now let's draw the pumpkin's mouth: towards the bottom of the pumpkin, draw two teeth. Start with a short line and draw a "V". After a short horizontal line, draw a second "V". Make the bottom of the mouth with a curved line interrupted by two upwards-pointing "V" shapes.
  • For the eyes, align them with the teeth. Draw a short diagonal line for the top of the eyes. Do the same on the opposite side ensuring that the eyes go beyond the edge of the mouth. Finish the eyes with curved lines for the outer edges and a straight line for the bottom of the eyes.

How to Draw a Skull

To turn your house into a haunted mansion, some skulls are always useful.

  • On an A4 piece of paper, draw a grid. You'll need 4 7.5cm columns and 3 7cm rows.
  • Draw the skull by making an oval with a rectangle underneath.
  • You can decorate the skull with things like a cross piercing one side.
  • Draw two large eye sockets and a triangle for the nasal cavity. You can draw the mouth like you would a scar; a horizontal line with vertical lines for the teeth.
  • You can colour the skull and then, go back over the lines with a marker, and then erase the construction lines and grid once everything's dry.

How to Draw the Scream Mask

Trick or treat?

Half-way between a ghost and a terrifying skull, the Scream mask is iconic.

  • Start by drawing the nasal cavities on a landscape piece of A4 paper as two teardrops. You don't need to worry too much about them being uniform. You can add depth to the inside of the cavities.
  • Next, you can draw the eyeholes either side of the nose. Again, you don't need to worry too much about them being uniform. You just have to draw a couple of pear- or bean-shaped cavities.
  • Under the nose, draw the mouth as an elongated and curved triangle.
  • You can draw the edge of the head by following the cavities.
  • Colour the cavities in black and then go back over your construction lines. You can also add some shading.

Let's go

Tips for Drawing Witches

After a pumpkin, a skull, and the "Scream" mask, what about drawing a witch, cauldron, and broomstick?

There are some excellent tutorials online for learning how to draw different types of witches. Choose the one that you like the most.

Search for good drawing classes here.

Don't forget that when you draw a witch, you might want to make sure that she's with her familiar, a black cat. Of course, art is meant to be fun so if you want to make the cat or the witch cute, that's fine, too!

How to Draw a Vampire for Halloween?

Dracula and other vampires can be excellent subjects to draw for Halloween.

  • Start by drawing an oval head and a couple of pointy ears on either side of the head.
  • To draw the cape, draw a line from beneath the middle of the face to underneath the ear and form a point back up to the ear. Do the same on the other side.
  • Draw an arm coming out of the cape by drawing a rectangle. Add a hand with hooked fingers.
  • Make sure that part of the cape is in front of him being held by his other hand. Start by drawing a curved line from the collar to the arm that holds the cape in front of the body and then downwards to the floor. Draw a second line for the edge of the cape on the other side to the floor. Then join the two edges of the cape with small curves to make them resemble the wings of a bat.
  • Draw a curve for the vampire's other hand at the closed part of the cape. Don't forget to make a line for the back of the cape, too.
  • Draw a wave shape for the vampire's hairline. Draw two circles for his eyes with a couple of lines underneath for bags. Draw a couple of pointed chevrons for his eyebrows, a hooked nose, and a mouth with a couple of pointy fangs.

Now you can colour it in.

Tips for Drawing Monsters

You can draw bats, skeletons, spiders, werewolves, mummies, etc. You're spoilt for choice when it comes to monsters for celebrating Halloween and there are costumes for adults and kids alike.

Check for available drawing classes online.

So which monster would you like?

You'll find plenty of tutorials. The choice is yours!

There are plenty of great drawing tutorials on the internet for different monsters and even tutorials on drawing scary eyes, teeth, etc.

Speaking of scary monsters, what's scarier than a clown?

Drawing Scary clowns

Despite appearing in circuses, clowns can be some of the scariest things around.

It helps if you add jagged teeth, an evil smile, dark eyes, scars, etc. You can use pencils or felt-tips and bright colours always help. After all, a clown without a red nose is barely a clown at all.

How to Draw a Zombie

Zombies are usually trickier to draw than the other things in this article. Of course, the undead is rather popular in horror films. Terrifying creatures looking for a bite of human brain or flesh are bound to give you the chills.

Drawing a zombie isn't really for novices. You'll need to plan out your drawing. You'll need to be aware of the zombie's form and think about colouring, too. Paint or inks are quite good for zombies.

If you're new to drawing, you might want to download something to trace over.

What better way to make Halloween more fun?

You could make your home into a haunted house. You download things for them to colour in, too. If it's all too scary, consider something colouring in something cute like Winnie the Pooh and Tigger!

If you're struggling, don't forget that there are step-by-step guides, printable activities, and loads of resources and activities online to help you. If you want to take your art even further, you or your kids may be interested in learning how to draw in a private tutorial.

There are plenty of students who choose to learn new skills with private tutors and you can learn almost anything with the help of a dedicated professional!

If you or the kids need help with art or drawing, consider getting help from a private tutor. On Superprof, you can search by subject and find the best private tutors in your area. Whether it's simple arts and crafts or helping kids pass their art exams, you can view each tutor's profile, see if their other students recommend them, and get in touch to arrange a lesson.

There are three main types of tutorials available: face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, and group tutorials. Each offers a different learning approach and comes with advantages and disadvantages.

Many of the tutors on the platform offer the first lesson for free so use this time to find out how they can best help you or your children. We recommend that you ask them how they'll tailor their approach to the student, what experience they have taught a given level or subject, and how they can make the learning process fun and engaging, which is incredibly important for young learners.
